We utilize several different types of vehicles to meet the various needs of the students we transport. All of these vehicles are Type III vans, which means that they can hold a maximum of nine passengers. When making a special request, it may be necessary to specify what kind of vehicle needs to be provided. With that, here are the currently available vehicle options, as well as some basic specifications to know what each vehicle has for students.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Minivan
Capacity: 5-6 ambulatory depending on age or size ∙ Maximum 4 carseats ∙ No wheelchair avaiability
The most frequently used vehicle for Type III transportation, minivans are great for covering trips which transport few students. These are typically Dodge Caravans but make and model may vary slightly. The front seat is available for those over twelve years of age. Due to the passenger side airbag, younger students are placed in the back seat unless IEP states otherwise.
Large Van
Capacity: 8-9 ambulatory depending on age or size ∙ Maximum 6 carseats ∙ No wheelchair avaiability
The large vans available are better for either longer routes, or those with students living in close proximity that need specialized transportation. These vehicles are usually Ford Transit vans, but make and model may vary slightly. The front seat is available for those over twelve years of age. Due to the passenger side airbag, younger students are placed in the back seat unless IEP states otherwise.
Wheelchair Vehicle
Capacity without wheelchair: 4-5 ambulatory depending on age or size ∙ Maximum 4 carseats
Capacity with wheelchair: 2-3 ambulatory depending on age or size ∙ Maximum 1 carseat ∙ 1 wheelchair
We have vans available with ramp or lift access to the vehicle for students that utilize wheelchairs. When a wheelchair is used, we can have an aide or additional passengers on board, but the wheelchair reduces the capacity of the vehicle overall. Without a wheelchair in the vehicle, there is room for more ambulatory students, and these vans can be used on routes with and without wheelchair students. The front seat is available for those over twelve years of age. Due to the passenger side airbag, younger students are placed in the back seat unless IEP states otherwise.
Behavior Control Vehicle
Capacity as minivan: 5-6 ambulatory depending on age or size ∙ Maximum 4 carseats ∙ No wheelchair availability
Capacity as BCV: 1 ambulatory ∙ No wheelchair availability
These vehicles, from the outside, appear to be standard minivans. Inside, they feature a partition separating driver from student, as well as reinforced plexiglass windows across the entire vehicle. In addition, the partition prevents the student from reaching the door handles to open the side doors. When utilized as a BCV, an aide is placed on the vehicle, and they sit in the passenger seat, separated by partition from the student. Plus, when used as a BCV, the student will ride individually.
Individual Vehicle
Capacity : 1 ambulatory
This is not a specific vehicle type, but rather a designation that a student must ride alone when on a vehicle. When the individual vehicle option is selected, the student will be routed out without any additional passengers. As far as the vehicle transporting them, it may be a minivan, a large van, a wheelchair van, or behavior control vehicle depending on location and vehicle availability.
The capacities listed do not include the driver. In addition, if a student on the route requires an aide or assistant to ride along, then the aide or assistant is added to the rider count. So for a minivan, it would not be possible to have six passengers and an aide riding in the same vehicle.
